Optical The predictable demise of Lenovo's small-business notebook linethe 3000 serieshappened with little or no notice. The gap between the enterprise ThinkPads and the 3000 series was simply too wide for any small-business user to bridge. Yet that ending allowed a new line of Lenovo small-business laptops to emerge. The ThinkPad SL400 ($1,129 direct) looks as if it's from the same gene pool as its enterprise brothers, and it inherits many of the classic ThinkPad design features, such as the signature keyboard and TrackPoint pointing stick. No slouch, the SL400 blazes the performance trails with a variety of processing options.

Effective Optical Disc Repair?

Optical "I have an extensive music collection on original CD media. While most of it is in impeccable condition, I have a few discs that have suffered extensive scratching through listening to the disc either via a portable disc player, or in a car CD stacker. I've long since learned the error of my old ways and don't listen to discs in those devices any more, but those discs are irreplaceable in many cases. I would very much like to be able to repair them or have them repaired to original condition, or at least well enough that I can pull the tracks off once and archive the track data. I have heard really uncomplimentary things about devices like the Skip Doctor; ranging from it not helping to it making things worse. I've heard great things about JFJ devices that are seen on the counters of most Hollywood and BlockBuster video stores, but even their consumer devices start at $250. I would appreciate any other suggestions for devices that people have had personal experience with that won't break the bank."

QPC Lasers Announces Asia Optical as Customer in Laser TV Contract; Successfully Demonstrate Laser TV Technology

SYLMAR, Calif., Aug 05, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- QPC Lasers, Inc. "QPC," a world leader in the design and manufacture of high brightness, high power semiconductor chip-based lasers for the consumer electronics, industrial, defense, and medical markets, today announced that the customer in recently announced $12 Million Laser TV Contract is Asia Optical (Taiwan Stock Exchange: 3019) "AOCI," Taiwan's leading optical consumer electronics manufacturer; AOCI has successfully demonstrated a sixty inch image based on RPTV Laser TV technology at QPC's headquarters in Los Angeles, CA. QPC initially announced the Laser TV development and production contract in November 2007, and completed the development just last month, marking an important milestone in the path to consumer available Laser TV. The contract with AOCI is an exclusive supply relationship which provides for an $11 Million supply agreement to be delivered over the next three years, and carries a potential value of up to $230 million over the 10 year term of the contract. Asia Optical Co. Inc. is Taiwan's leading original equipment manufacturer "OEM" and original designed manufacturer "ODM" of optical instruments, including fiber optics, digital cameras, DVD imaging, laser range finders and more. The company designs, manufactures and distributes its products all over the world; AOCI's products are sold under a number of well known household consumer electronic brand names. AOCI was founded in 1981, and today annual sales exceed $1 Billion USD. QPC's BrightLase(R) Red-Green-Blue "RGB" lasers offer advantages to consumer electronics manufacturers including expanded color gamut for an exceptionally bright visual experience, low power consumption, an ultra compact footprint, and are designed for low cost high volume manufacturing. QPC offers integrated visible laser technologies designed to be compatible with the leading micro-display technology including LCOS, scanning micro-mirrors, DLP and LCD. "We are honored to be working with Asia Optical and are very excited to announce this demonstration, which we feel stands as a disruptive technology to the market," said co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of QPC, Dr. Jeffrey Ungar. "QPC recently entered the market for visible lasers late last year, and announced our Laser TV contract with Asia Optical in November of 2007. Less than eight months later we have delivered our lasers to spec and Asia Optical has already demonstrated a very large and impressive first image; I believe this achievement is a testament to AOCI's engineering team, our next-generation technology, and our combined synergies which I am confident will enable a highly competitive family of laser televisions." Utilizing QPC's high power, compact, and cost effective semiconductor laser technology, laser displays offer a dramatically improved viewing experience compared to other older and/or more expensive technologies available today such as those based on lamps, plasma, LCDs, and conventional cathode ray tubes. Consumers may enjoy substantially more vibrant, life-like colors with the high resolution and wide viewing angles from lightweight, low cost, slim-profile devices. "QPC's ultra high quality laser beam technology is unique, is protected by 16 patents, trade secrets and proprietary processes; in addition to televisions, a variety of projection displays are in position to profit from our superior laser light sources including portable projectors for cell phones and laptops, home and commercial theatre, video gaming as well as 3 Dimensional applications for which we announced a $3.5 Million contract earlier this month," Ungar concluded. QPC completed the required development milestones on July 7, 2008 (see announcement) and originally announced the $12 Million contract in November 2007 (see announcement). QPC demonstrated its first green laser based on frequency doubling of its proprietary BrightLase(R) single-mode laser technology. (See announcement.)

New chief Sanjay Jha to ring changes at Motorola unit

50million units. Shares in the group have fallen by more than 60per cent since October 2006, when investors began to becomedisillusioned with the company's falling sales. Its global marketshare has fallen to 9.5 per cent from 24 per cent two years ago, taking it from second to third place behind Nokia and Samsung. In March Motorola agreed to float the handset unit after pressurefrom Carl Icahn, the billionaire activist shareholder, who arguedthat the failing division should be restructured. Mr Icahn, who is the group's second-biggest shareholder with a 6.3per cent stake, had hoped to appoint Keith Meister, who runs MrIcahn's $8 billion (£4.08 billion) investment fund, as headof the handset unit. Motorola has been searching for a chief executive of the unit sinceMarch. Greg Brown, who became chief executive of the group lastNovember, stepped in to lead the division in the interim. Dr Jha, 45, who was born in India, lived in Britain for 15 yearsbefore moving to the United States in 1994 to work for Qualcomm, the wireless technology developer. He was was made chief operatingofficerby Qualcomm in late 2006. He has also been made co-chiefexecutive of Motorola group alongside Mr Brown, who will continueto run its home entertainment and public safety units. Simona Jankowski and Thomas Lee, analysts for Goldman Sachs, calledhis appointment "a big win" for Motorola and a loss forQualcomm. Ben Wood, head of research at CCS Insight, said: "Sanjay Jhais very well connected in the mobile industry and knows thechallenges facing him. Taking on that role is a hugely dauntingtask, but I think he has the personality to pull the companyforward." Others fear that resuscitating the unit may be too great achallenge. Carolina Milanesi, research director for mobile devicesat Gartner, said: "He's very knowledgable and veryno-nonsense, but I don't know if he has enough vision to turnthings around in terms of design and brand." Last week Motorola surprised Wall Street by reporting a smallsecond-quarter profit, led by the success of its home entertainmentand public safety units. Although sales of its mobile phones grewto 28.1 million in the second quarter, up from 27 million in thefirst, the group predicted slowing sales in the third quarter.Qualcomm said that Len Lauer, its executive vice-president, wouldreplace Dr Jha. Shares in Motorola rose $1.01, or more than 11 per cent, to closeat $9.82 in New York. Qualcomm's shares fell $2.60, nearly 5per cent, to end the day at $52.87.

Linux to Outsell Windows in Mobile Internet Device Market

Mobile Linux will outsell Microsoft Windows Mobile and other rivalOS makers in the mobile Internet device market by 2013, says ABIResearch. Moblin, LiMo and Maemo will be the leading Linux mobileproviders. Linux will be the top-selling operating system in the mobileInternet device market, outselling Microsoft Windows Mobile andother rivals by 2013, said ABI Research. The MID market is relatively small nowonly 305,000 MID units areexpected to be shipped in 2008but it is expected to grow to 39.6million units in 2012. Linux will dominate that growth, said Stuart Carlaw, AlliedBusiness Intelligence's research director. The MID market presents a rare green field for Linux, said thereport from ABI, "Bringing License-Free Operating Systems toSmartphones and Middle-Tier Devices." In MIDs, all mobile OSesare starting out about equal, "without the baggage of previoushistories such as existed in the smart-phone market." Linuxwill lead the pack, said the research group, due in large part to"its ability to provide a converged platform that can spanmultiple device segments." New LiMo phones challenge Android. Click here to read more. "The flexibility, customization and very positive costcomparison to Windows Mobile look set to ensure that Linux takesthe leading role in this market," Carlaw said. Mobile Linux providers LiMo, Maemo and Moblin are laying thegroundwork now to lead the pack when the market gets going, ABIsaid. LiMo's main focus is on phones, and the group announced seven new LiMo-compliant handsets Aug. 4. But supporting MIDs means LiMo greatly increases the targethardware options available to software developers targeting LiMomobile phones. Maemo and Moblin are sponsored by Nokia and Intel, respectively. Both platforms are currently aimed closely at their target markets:Nokia Internet Tablets for Maemo, and Intel Atom-based MIDs forMoblin. Intel and Moblin are expected to ship Moblin 2.0 in August. Click here to read the full story on LinuxDevices.com.

-By Shahnaz Mahmud NEW YORK Interactive TV firm SinglePoint has launched what it believes tobe the first mobile ad insertion platform. Dubbed SingleBrand, theoffering is designed to retrieve and serve ads for interactiveshows on networks such as Bravo, NBC, MTV, Fox and the CW. "This is the first time that anybody has provided a vehicle forother ad networks to get exposure to messaging traffic availablefor ad insertion. The idea of what we are trying to do here isexpose all of the inventory that is eligible from our clients andmake that available to a variety of other ad networks," said RichBegert, president and CEO of SinglePoint. One mobile ad net that's signed up is RingLeader Digital.Discussions are underway with several others, Begert said. When viewers respond to calls to action -- for example, voting fortheir favorite performer via their mobile phones - they're served aconfirmation reply that also includes an ad message. Thus,SinglePoint's media and entertainment partners can generate revenueby providing advertisers access to viewers. Advertisers can use click-to-call, click-to-link and click-to-SMSon the platform. Begert noted that SingleBrand allows advertisers to more carefullytarget prospects, while consumers receive more relevant messages"so they are not just being bombarded with aimless types ofadvertising." U.S. mobile advertising revenue is expected to exceed $2 billion by2012, said Vikrant Gandhi, senior analyst at Frost et Sullivan."2008 is an exciting turning point for the industry, where mobileadvertising is actually becoming a line item for leading agenciesand brands. A greater participation of advertisers in the mobileopportunity is expected to be the prime growth driver."
