Boy's feet burned after shoes start to melt

The area is in an open space owned by the city of Colorado Springsin the Rockrimmon section of town, which was once known for itscoal mining. Monday, the boy was walking with his family when he stepped onto apatch of ground believed to be a waste pile of coal dust known as"coal spoil." It was super heated by sunlight to a temperature of 800 degrees. The boy suffered second-degree burns when his Shoes With Springs started tomelt. The city says it will cover the coal spoil with about 3 feet of topsoil.
